Activity 1: Plan It Out

(10 minutes)

Jump right into the film-making process. If you already did Sketch a Story,  read over your script and storyboard again and decide if you want to make any edits. If you are starting fresh, think about your story idea, write a script, and make a storyboard. Don’t rush the process; it might take a couple days. Do you think it is important to start with a solid story idea? Why or why not?

Remember, keep it short! Try telling your story in a minute or two. One way to keep your movie short is to think of it as the trailer, which only shows the key scenes from a movie. Check out this Movie Trailer produced by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

Activity 2: Start Shooting

(30 minutes)

Use any device you have available to shoot your movie. How do your script and storyboard help you while shooting? Try a couple takes of each scene. Remember to keep the action and dialogue tight and short.

Activity 3: It's All in the Edits

(30 minutes)

Upload all the footage from your camera or mobile device into a video editor.

  • If you are using a Mac, open iMovie, the video editing software that comes with Macs.

  • If you are using a PC with Windows, open Movie Maker.

    • If the program is not already on your computer, download it here.

  • Do you have a YouTube account? YoutTube also has a built-in video editor you can access here: https://www.youtube.com/editor

    • YouTube's video editor also comes with free music and sound effects

  • If you don't have iMovie or Movie Maker but you do have internet access, visit https://www.wevideo.com/sign-in and use the following information:

Open your footage and start editing the scenes and putting them together. If you are not sure how to do something in the program you are using, look up a tutorial, like this one, either through a search engine or YouTube.

Activity 5: Share and Submit

(5-10 minutes)

Hold a screening of your film for other club members. Ask for their thoughts and opinions. Does their feedback spark any ideas for your next silent film project?
