Karaoke Kickoff

Activity 1: The Joy of Karaoke

(5 minutes)

Have you ever done karaoke? (It’s pronounced carry-oh-key) Watch this boy sing karaoke in a grocery store. (You only need to watch the first minute or two.) How would you explain karaoke to someone who had never heard of it?

Activity 2: What is your song?

(15 minutes)

Is there a song you’ve always wanted to sing solo? Maybe you’ve always wanted to belt it out like Adele or sing like twenty one pilots. Choose a song that you have in MP3 format. Next, download or open the free computer software Audacity or load your song into Soundtrap.

Activity 3: Make a Karaoke Track

(20 minutes)

When people sing Karaoke, they use what’s called the “instrumental version” of a song. This means that only the instruments are playing, but the lead singer isn’t singing. Why? Because you’re going to be the lead singer.

Follow the steps in this tutorial, or follow along with this video tutorial. If you get stuck, try going back a few steps. If you are still stuck, try a different tutorial or do a search for a solution to your problem.

Activity 4: Sing Along!

(15 minutes)

When you are done with your track, try singing along. If you don’t have the words memorized, look up the lyrics. Grab some friends and see if they want to sing along with you.

Do you bring a new vibe to the song? Or do you think you match the original singer so well someone might not know the difference? If you want, record yourself singing to the karaoke track. Start a new project in Audacity and record while you sing and play the karaoke track.

If you like singing karaoke, create more instrument-only tracks. Bear in mind, that the karaoke track you created is only legal for personal use, not commercial, so you can’t make any profit from it.

Activity 6: Submit
