Club Tour

Activity 1: What is a silent film?

(10 minutes)

What do you know about silent films? Keep your ideas in mind as you watch this scene with famous silent film actor Charlie Chaplin. Could you follow the story without words? Think about the advantages and disadvantages of silent movies while you watch the short film Best Friends.

Activity 2: What Makes Your Club Special?

(15 minutes)

Your silent-movie-mission is to create a tour of your club. First, brainstorm ideas for what types of footage you want to get. What makes your Club fun and unique? Ask a few other members what they think and incorporate their perspectives into your filming plan.

Activity 3: Start Filming

(20 minutes)

Instead of doing a single-shot walking tour, film several distinct scenes using a tripod or camera stand. (If you don’t have one you can set your camera on a stable surface or make one. Search the internet for a tutorial on how.) It is ok if your camera picks up on background noise, but don’t speak while you are shooting. Why do you think it is a good idea to take a few minutes of footage in each spot, even though you will only use a small portion of what you shoot?

Activity 4: Edit your Shots Together

(30 minutes)

Upload all the footage from your camera or mobile device into a video editor.

If you are using a Mac, open iMovie.

If you are using a PC with Windows open Movie Maker.

If neither of those work, you can visit https://www.wevideo.com/sign-in and use the following information:

When all your video footage is loaded into the video editor, watch all the footage and identify clips that you want to use. Trim the footage and stitch the clips together, using transitions between them, if you like. If you hear some background noise, you can mute the sound in your video like this:

  • In Movie Maker, you can select “Video Volume” and move the slider to mute. From there, you can add a song to play during your silent film.

  • In iMovie, look for the Action pop-up icon (it looks like a gear) and select “Audio Adjustments.” Use the slider to adjust the volume.

You could also add a slide with written words to intro the video.

Play around with your video editor. Experiment with different features. If you want, look up tutorials online for how to do specific things like adding music to your silent video.

Activity 5: Ask for Feedback, Iterate, and Submit!

(20 minutes)

Hold a screening of your film for other club members. Ask for their thoughts and opinions. Does their feedback spark any ideas for your next silent film project?
