Tinkercad 101

Activity 1: Intro to CAD

(5 minutes)

If you want to design something, one option is to draw your design. But what if the thing you are making is a complex 3D object? Another option is to design using a computer software. This type of design is called computer-aided design, or CAD.

When you are designing something to 3D print, you can use CAD to make an on-screen model. The model is represented in 3D and you can turn it to see it from all angles. You can easily adjust, add to, manipulate, measure, and duplicate your design. Why do you think it would be helpful to make models like this on a computer?

Activity 2: Welcome to Tinkercad!

(10 minutes)

There are many CAD programs compatible with 3D printing. Open https://www.tinkercad.com/learn/  in a new tab or window. Sign up for an account if you are older than 13, or you can use the following login:

After you enter your email and a password Tinkercad automatically takes you to a series of intro lessons that show you how to use the software. The lessons help you design things and learn new 3D design skills, and they are super quick and easy. Play through them all.

Activity 3: Tinker Away

(20 minutes)

Now choose one of the Tinkercad projects to complete. Find the projects by clicking on the “Learn” tab at the top-left corner of your home screen after logging in. The projects are at the bottom of the Learn page. Choose one, or complete them all!
