Lighten Up

Activity 1: When is a Flash Useful?

(10 minutes)

What do you know about the flash on a camera? When is it used? Do you ever turn on or off the flash on your camera? Check out this video and take note of any new stuff you learn.

Activity 2: What are some reasons people manipulate photos?

(10 minutes)

Which photo looks better? What do you think “overexposed” means?

Pick up your camera or smartphone and figure out how to turn the flash on or off. It might be set in auto mode right now. That means the camera “decides” whether to use the flash based on how much light there at the moment. Take a couple photos with and without flash. Do you notice a difference?

Check out page 5 of the PowerPoint. Follow the ideas for using, but diffusing, the flash. Experiment with the different methods.

Activity 3: How does a Flash Change the Look of a Photo?

(20 minutes)

Grab some supplies, split into pairs and choose a subject. Take several photos of your subject using the flash diffusion techniques you just learned. How do they affect your photos?

Activity 4: Submit your work!

(5 minutes)
